The Power of Proximity: Why Your Next Breakthrough Might Be in the Room

The Power of Proximity: Why Your Next Breakthrough Might Be in the Room

There’s a moment that happens at every Slay the Spray that you won’t find on the schedule.

It doesn’t happen during a keynote. It doesn’t happen during a presentation or even necessarily during one of our planned networking sessions. More often than not, it happens in the hallway, over breakfast, while waiting for coffee, or at the cocktail party.

It’s the conversation you almost didn’t have. The person you almost didn’t introduce yourself to. The seat you almost didn’t take.

And somehow, that small, seemingly insignificant moment can end up changing everything.

When I first started my spray tanning business, I believed that the key to success was learning as much as possible. I wanted more certifications, more training, more strategies, and more information. I thought that if I could just learn enough, I would eventually have all the answers I needed to grow.

Education absolutely played a huge role in my journey, but over the years, I learned something equally important: information alone doesn’t always create transformation. Sometimes, proximity does.

There is something incredibly powerful about putting yourself in a room with people who are thinking bigger, moving differently, and solving problems that you are currently trying to figure out yourself. You hear conversations that stretch your perspective. You discover approaches you never would have considered on your own. You meet someone who is already living out the version of success you’re working toward and realize that they aren’t fundamentally different from you. They simply decided to go for it.

When you change who and what you surround yourself with, you can change what you believe is possible for yourself.

Some of the biggest turning points in my own business journey can be traced back to rooms I almost didn’t walk into. There were rooms where I felt intimidated. There were rooms where I wondered if I was experienced enough, successful enough, or qualified enough to belong.

But I walked in anyway.

And those rooms became catalysts for growth because they challenged me to think beyond the version of myself I had already become.

The Cost of Trying to Figure It All Out Alone

One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs can make is believing they have to figure everything out by themselves.

We tell ourselves that we’ll attend the event next year. We’ll invest in ourselves once the business is making more money. We’ll start networking when we feel more established. We’ll put ourselves out there once we have more confidence.

The problem is that there will almost always be a reason to wait.

There will always be another expense, another busy season, another business goal, or another excuse that makes it feel like the timing isn’t quite right.

But confidence rarely comes before the experience.

Sometimes, you have to walk into the room before you feel ready. You have to introduce yourself before you feel confident. You have to ask the question before you know whether you belong in the conversation.

And then something happens.

You realize you’re capable of more than you thought.

The conversation gives you clarity. The connection gives you an opportunity. The experience gives you confidence. And the simple decision to show up puts you in a position where growth can actually happen.

Why Your Environment Matters

There is a different kind of confidence that comes from being surrounded by people who understand what you’re trying to build.

Imagine being able to talk about your goals without feeling like you have to make them smaller for someone else’s comfort. Imagine sitting across from another business owner who understands exactly what it feels like to worry about bookings, pricing, hiring, scaling, marketing, or figuring out your next move.

Instead of explaining why you want more, you’re surrounded by people who are asking, “Why not?”

That environment can change you.

The goal that once felt unrealistic starts to feel achievable. The problem you've been trying to solve for months suddenly has a solution. An idea you've been sitting on finally gets the encouragement it needs to become a plan.

And perhaps one of the most valuable parts is realizing that the challenges you’re experiencing aren’t unique to you. Someone else has probably faced them before, and they may already know what helped them move through them.

That kind of insight can save you years of trial and error.

But the value of proximity extends far beyond the event itself. The woman you meet at breakfast could become a lifelong business friend. A conversation at a cocktail party could turn into a collaboration. A connection that begins as a simple introduction could eventually become a mentor relationship, a business opportunity, or the support system you didn’t know you needed.

The event may last three days.

But, the relationships can last much longer.

The Magic of Slay the Spray Isn’t Just on the Stage

Of course, the education matters.

The speakers matter. The strategies matter. The training, demonstrations, and conversations happening throughout the event are a huge part of what makes Slay the Spray special.

But the magic has never been limited to what happens on stage.

It’s the woman sitting next to you.

It’s the person you meet while grabbing coffee.

It’s the business owner who casually shares an idea that makes you rethink something you’ve been doing for years.

It’s the friendship that turns into a collaboration.

It’s meeting someone who was once exactly where you are now.

It’s hearing someone share their story and suddenly realizing that the thing you’ve been telling yourself is impossible might actually be possible.

Those moments are difficult to put on a schedule because you can’t predict them.

You simply have to put yourself in the room where they can happen.

What Could Be Different One Year From Now?

Imagine that one year from today, you look back and know that you made the decision to attend.

You made the connections. You had the conversations. You learned something that completely changed the way you approached your business. You came home with a new strategy, a new perspective, and a renewed belief in what you’re capable of.

What could be different?

How much could your business grow? How much more confident could you become? What decisions might you make differently? What opportunities could become available because of one connection you made in that room?

We often imagine that major breakthroughs happen because of one huge, life-changing decision. But sometimes, the biggest shifts begin with something much smaller.

One conversation.

One introduction.

One idea.

One room.

One decision to put yourself somewhere new.

That is the power of proximity.

And that is one of the reasons Slay the Spray exists.

We want to educate you, of course. But we also want to connect you with women who understand your goals, challenge the way you think, and encourage you to see a bigger future for your business.

Because you don’t have to build your dream business alone.

And you never know which conversation will become the one you look back on years from now and think, “That was the moment everything changed.”

You just have to be willing to show up.

Get in the room.

Your next breakthrough might already be waiting for you there.

See you at Slay the Spray.
